Petrolatums vary greatly in oil content (from 7 to 38%) in terms of dropping point, which mainly depends on the dropping point of the solid hydrocarbons included in their composition.

The material, which is called petrolatum, is a viscous light brown mass resembling ordinary plasticine. This is a mixture of ceresin, paraffin and oil, which is obtained after the removal of paraffin hydrocarbons from residual petroleum oils, selective or sulfuric acid treatment.

Characteristics
